What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve, running from your brainstem down through your neck, chest, and into your abdomen. It's the main highway of the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" system that opposes fight-or-flight.

When the vagus nerve is stimulated, your body:

  • Lowers heart rate
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Decreases cortisol (stress hormone)
  • Improves digestion
  • Promotes calm, clarity, and focus

How Chewing Activates It

Rhythmic chewing stimulates branches of the vagus nerve through the jaw and facial muscles. The trigeminal nerve (jaw) and facial nerve connect to vagal pathways, creating a direct physical link between jaw movement and nervous system calm.

This is why:

  • Babies self-soothe by sucking
  • People chew gum during stressful situations
  • Smokers feel "calm" when they inhale (it's the deep breath + oral stimulation, not the nicotine)
  • Chewing ice or pen caps feels satisfying during anxiety

The CHEWZ Connection

Every CHEWZ product leverages vagal stimulation:

  • Puffers: Deep inhale/exhale pattern directly stimulates the vagus via breath control
  • Stix: Rhythmic chewing activates vagal pathways through jaw muscles
  • Toothpicks: Oral presence + gentle chewing provides sustained low-level vagal activation

This isn't marketing speak. It's neuroscience. Your products are literally activating your body's built-in calming system.
